In the evening Samskrita Sangha – a students’ group - at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore had organized a talk titled “Swami Vivekananda and Human Excellence” – by a monk from our Ashrama.

Also, as a part of Social Welfare Activities, monks of Ramakrishna Math, Ulsoor, visited the inmates of Central Prison in Bangalore on the occasion of Sankranti.

Bhajans, meditation class and Lecture by a monk were held. Also Saris were distributed to 120 women inmates.

Ashrama is permitted by the Prison Authorities, to have monthly Satsanga with Jail inmates, especially for the youths.

On 12th January 2010, on the occasion of the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, celebrated by the Government of India as the National Youth Day, Samskrita Sangha at Indian Institute of Science had organized a talk by a monk from Ramakrishna Math, Ulsoor, Bangalore.

Here is an outline of the talk titled “Swami Vivekananda and Human Excellence”.

The world and India has seen several saints and prophets. When almost all of them talked about God, Swami Vivekananda insisted on dignity of man. The main theme of Swamiji’s lectures, private talks, writings, letters, etc. was Human Excellence. He wanted every human being to manifest the best qualities in all spheres of life. The best examples of the ideal for human excellance are Swami Vivekananda himself and Sri Krishna.

The person who has achieved the utmost excellence in his life is a man of harmony. Krishna presents a vivd picture of such a man at several occasions in the Bhagavad Gita. In his personality and life, we see harmony between pair of apparant opposites like gentleness and fearlessness, renunciation and service, faith and rationality, meditation and work, etc. Usually we meet two kinds of noble people – the meditative introverted renunciate and the ever active social worker. A harmony of both of these in the same person is the epitome of Human Excellence.

Human Excellence can be broadly classified as Character Excellence and Spiritual Excellence.

Character Excellence requires three qualities – (1) Knowledge of ways to uplift mankind, (2) Capacity to put the knowledge into practice, and most importantly, (3) Strength of conviction.  Conviction (shradda) is the most important factor and is the seed of all good action. Conviction is of three things – (1) Conviction in the potential of oneself, (2) Conviction in the power of goodness, (3) Conviction in the meaningfulness of the world and society.

There have been several people of great achievements in  Character Excellence. But ultimate fulfillment in life will come only from Spiritual Excellence. This is having the true knowledge about oneself as the pure Consciousness, ever unattached and beyond all cause-effect relationships.

Swami Vivekananda was a perfect blend of Character and Spiritual Excellence. By following his teachings, we also can strive to inculcate these concepts in our life and attain both these aspects of Human Excellence.

This is to notify that Swami Paramasukhananda, would taking classes on Bhagavad Gita in the temple premises between 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, every Saturday, starting from 16th Jan, 2010.

In the month of November our Math had participated in an Annual Bangalore Book festival 2009 held from 6th to 15th November at Gayathri Vihar, Palace Grounds, Bangalore. About 2 lakh people visited this Book Festival. A complementary book “Vivekananda - His Call to the Nation” was given to 15,000 youths who visited our stall.

With a view to build a better society and to inculcate higher values among the public in general and students in particular, various activities are organized. Every year we conduct Inter School Cultural Competition, with a view to inculcate higher values and to give an insight into our ancient heritage.

This year, the following competitions were held between August and September 2009 for the children from L.K.G. to X Standard:

1. Srimat Bhagavat Gita Chanting Competition – The participants were asked to chant 20 shlokas from the chapters 2^nd and 17^th.

 2. Painting Competition: The topics were “Zoo or Green Bangalore” for Primary School and “Our Solar System” for High School.    

3. Essay Writing: On the “Future of India according to Swami Vivekananda”

4. Elocution Competition: For High School – “Personality Development according to Swami Vivekananda” and for Primary School students – “The Character I like most in Ramayana and Mahabharata”.

5. Quiz Competition: This consisted of 6 rounds of questions culled from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Life of Swami Vivekananda, and the History of Indian Freedom Struggles and Maths & science puzzles. 

6. Fancy Dress for L.K.G. to 4^th Standard – Indian saints, Gods and goddesses

In total, 18 schools took part in the competition. A total of 58 prizes along with certificates are being awarded to the winners. This includes 13 first prizes; 13 second prizes; 15 third prizes; and 17 consolation prizes. Each participants were given one Badge so also a participation certificate.

As a part of Yuvajagrati - Youth Awareness Programme, our Ashrama has conducted a one-day seminar on Saturday, 29^th May 2009 for the Principals of Bangalore University First Grade (Degree) Colleges.

Topic: “Role of Educational Institutions in Imparting Moral and Ethical Values to the College Students”.

This Seminar was co-organized by the Bangalore University First Grade College Principal’s Association, Bangalore.

Ramakrishna Math, Ulsoor, Bangalore conducted a Summer Camp for children for the 10^th consecutive year. It was a 15 day program. Each day started with prayers consisting of Shanti Mantras from the Vedas and Bhajans. This was followed by a Yogasana class and Moral class. Then there was a tiffin break. Finally there was a general session. The children came in at 8am and left at 12 noon.

Sri Shadakshari was the chief guest of the inauguration program. Swami Shantimayanandaji from Ramakrishna Math, Basavanagudi, Bangalore was the chief guest of the Valedictory function.

There was a lot of variety in the general session. The children enjoyed a breathtaking Magic Show by the child prodigy Master Karan. This program also made the children realize that if they try, they too can explore and develop the talents hidden in them. The program “Jeevanadalli Hasya” gave a new dimension to the way the children would look at life. Puppet show done by the children of Swami Vivekananda Educational Society held the attention of the children and helped them to appreciate this wonderful folk art of Karnataka. As the program was entirely done by children it had a very special appeal to the children attending the camp. The topics of lectures given by eminent speakers included Aviation. Mental Mathematics, Craft, Music and Personality Development. Quiz and Drawing competitions were also held during the camp.

To top it all, the children performed Vidyarthi Homa with detailed instructions and explanations from the monks and brahmacharis of the Math. The parents also were invited to witness the homa. Both the students and parents enjoyed it a lot. Many children fondly recollected the homa as one of the best aspects of the camp.

Excerpt 1:
20th August, 1893.

Yesterday Mrs. Johnson, the lady superintendent of the women’s prison, was here. They don’t call it prison but reformatory here. It is the grandest thing I have seen in America. How the inmates are benevolently treated, how they are reformed and sent back as useful members of society; how grand, how beautiful, You must see to believe! And, oh, how my heart ached to think of what we think of the poor, the low, in India. They have no chance, no escape, no way to climb up. The poor, the low, the sinner in India have no friends, no help — they cannot rise, try however they may. They sink lower and lower every day, they feel the blows showered upon them by a cruel society, and they do not know whence the blow comes. They have forgotten that they too are men. And the result is slavery. Thoughtful people within the last few years have seen it, but unfortunately laid it at the door of the Hindu religion, and to them, the only way of bettering is by crushing this grandest religion of the world. Hear me, my friend, I have discovered the secret through the grace of the Lord. Religion is not in fault. On the other hand, your religion teaches you that every being is only your own self multiplied. But it was the want of practical application, the want of sympathy — the want of heart. The Lord once more came to you as Buddha and taught you how to feel, how to sympathise with the poor, the miserable, the sinner, but you heard Him not. Your priests invented the horrible story that the Lord was here for deluding demons with false doctrines! True indeed, but we are the demons, not those that believed. And just as the Jews denied the Lord Jesus and are since that day wandering over the world as homeless beggars, tyrannised over by everybody, so you are bond-slaves to any nation that thinks it worth while to rule over you. Ah, tyrants! you do not know that the obverse is tyranny, and the reverse slavery. The slave and the tyrant are synonymous.

Excerpt 2:
Delivered in Memphis on January 17, 1894:

“For four months I have been in America. In Massachusetts I visited a reformatory prison. The jailor at that prison never knows for what crimes the prisoners are incarcerated. The mantle of charity is thrown around them. In another city there were three newspapers, edited by very learned men, trying to prove that severe punishment was a necessity, while one other paper contended that mercy was better than punishment. The editor of one paper proved by statistics that only fifty per cent of criminals who received severe punishment returned to honest lives, while ninety per cent of those who received light punishment returned to useful pursuits in life.

As a part of Value Education Programme our Math is participating in various fairs wherein our litereatures are exhibited and ideas regarding the Value Education are counsseled.

Recently we have participated in the Bangalore IT.Biz an International IT Exhibition conducted by the Dept. of IT & BT, Karnataka.
During these occasions our Math is distributing the complementary book “Vivekananda - His Call to the Nation” to all the visitors.

In the month of November our Math is going to participate in an Annual Bangalore Book festival to be held from 14th november to 23rd in Palace Ground, Bangalore. Those who are stationed in Bangalore are cordially invited to visit the stall. (No.125 to 128). About 2 lakh people will be attending this Book Festival. We are planning to give the complimentary books to about 50,000 youths.

Relief  Work : A  Brief  Report  As  ON  1  OCTOber  2008

1. Flood Relief: Our centres in Bihar and other states are continuing their relief operations in affected areas.  Details of the relief materials distributed by them during the last month are given below. 

(a)   Bihar: (i) Katihar – 49,800 kg chira, 8584 kg gur, 21,740 packets of biscuits, 4,00,000 halogen tablets, 1700 torches, 1500 chadars, 420 saris, 280 dhotis, 282 mats and 1500 stainless steel utensil sets (each set containing 1 plate, 1 bowl and 1 glass) to 1200 families belonging to Madhepura district which have taken shelter in temporary camps at Rupauli town in Purnea district and 1500 families belonging to Pranpur block of Katihar district.  

(ii) Muzaffarpur – 26,620 kg chira, 3105 kg gur, 250 kg sugar, 12,250 kg rice, 600 kg flour, 1870 kg dal, 611 kg chana, 150 kg soya-bean, 150 kg potatoes, 20 kg salt, 154 kg biscuits, 2375 litre drinking water, 1200 matchboxes, 5,31,500 halogen tablets and 42,000 assorted garments to 33,985 flood-affected families belonging to 107 villages of Madhepura and Saharsa districts.  Besides, the centre treated 1240 flood-stricken patients.  

(iii) Patna – 1,50,000 packets of biscuits, 5000 kg milk powder, 5000 kg chhatu, 10,000 steel plates, 10,000 steel tumblers, 10,000 saris, 10,000 dhotis, 10,000 towels and 7,00,000 halogen tablets to 10,000 flood-affected families belonging to Purnea, Madhepura and Supaul districts.  Besides, the centre served cooked food, and distributed 5000 kg chira, 500 kg gur, 40,000 packets of biscuits and 40,000 fruit bars to 1000 families belonging to Fervisganj sub-division of Araria district near Nepal border.  Medical care was also provided.

(b)  Gujarat: Limbdi – 3000 kg bajra, 3000 kg rice, 1200 kg dal, 1200 kg cooking oil, 1200 kg sugar, 180 kg tea and 600 chadars to 600 flood-affected families of a village near Nal Sarovar in Surendranagar district.

(c)   Orissa: (i) Bhubaneswar – 5280 kg chira, 1320 kg sugar, 5280 packets of biscuits, 1320 kg salt, 5280 candles and 5280 matchboxes to 1320 flood-affected families of Pipili block in Puri district, and 1230 school bags, 2460 notebooks, 2460 pens and other study materials to 1230 flood-affected students of 10 schools in Bhadrak and Jajpur districts.  

(ii) Puri Math – 1500 kg rice, 300 kg flour and 300 kg chira to 375 flood victims belonging to 3 villages of Tigiri and Banki blocks in Puri district.

(iii) Puri Mission – 5000 kg chira and 500 kg sugar to 1000 flood-affected families belonging to 13 villages of Gop block in Puri district.

(d)  Uttar Pradesh: Lucknow – 2000 kg chira, 500 kg sugar, 3935 kg rice, 1090 kg flour, 460 kg dal, 4489 kg vegetables, 490 dozen bananas, 1500 saris, 580 dhotis, 900 lungis, 1390 shirts, 1390 pants, 2528 other garments, 940 blankets and 940 mats to 940 flood-affected families belonging to 8 villages of Bakshi-Ka-Talab Tehsil in Lucknow district.  Besides, the centre treated 2341 flood-stricken patients.

(e) West Bengal: (i) Belgharia – 555 saris, 271 dhotis, 571 shirts, 319 pants, 64 sweaters, 1136 children’s garments and 419 blankets to 197 families belonging to 2 villages of Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur districts.  The centre also added 1085 books to the book-banks it had created two months ago in Paschim Medinipur district for the benefit of students whose books had been washed away in the flood.

(ii) Malda – 6008 kg rice, 313 kg dal, 1771 kg potatoes, 600 kg salt, 300 kg sugar and 130 kg biscuits to 558 flood-affected families of 8 villages in Harishchandrapur - II block, Malda district.

(iii) Manasadwip – 1802 kg chira and 300 kg sugar to 1236 families belonging to 4 villages of Sagar block in South 24 Parganas district.

(iv) Taki – 3650 kg chira, 523 kg gur, 81 kg biscuits, 36 kg milk powder and 35,000 halogen tablets to 764 families belonging to 8 villages of Minakha block in North 24 Parganas district.

2.       Distress Relief: The following centres distributed various items, shown in brackets, to poor and needy persons: Belgharia (266 saris, 104 dhotis, 427 shirts, 213 pants, 561 children’s garments, 220 blankets and 79 sweaters to 220 families of Naihati and Jaipur blocks in North 24 Parganas and Bankura districts), Garbeta (168 saris, 45 dhotis, 38 lungis, 20 shirts and 20 vests to 120 families), Ichapur (1100 kg rice, 660 kg flour, 220 kg dal, 220 kg coconut oil and 440 kg salt to 220 families of 3 villages in Khanakul – I block, Hooghly district), Kanchipuram (school uniforms to 21 children, notebooks and other study materials to 750 poor students, and 30 tarpaulins to 23 families), Narainpur (school bags, books, notebooks, pens and other study materials to 450 poor students), Puri Math (school uniforms to 97 poor students).

As a part of Rural Welfare Programme, our Ashrama has started Narayana Seva. This project is meant to help those who could not afford to purchase the food articles due to the prize hike and poverty.

By this project, food articles for the poor lactating-mothers and senior citizens in the remote villages are being distributed.

Each family gets

Rice – 10 kgs.

Ragi  – 10 kgs (or) Aatta – 5kgs.

Dal   – 5  kgs

Oil   –  2  lts.

More than 500 families in 19 villages are getting benefited by this scheme.

The Inter-School Cultural Competitions 2008 conducted by our Math during August –

September 2008 has come to the conclusion The prize distribution function was held on

Sunday, 14^th September, 2008 at 10.00 a.m.  Sri Sivasailam, IAS, Managing Director,

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., presided over the function and distributed the

prizes to the children.

In all 508 students from 15 schools took part in the competition. A total of 77 prizes

along with certificates are being awarded to the winners. This includes 15 first prizes; 18

We are confident that these cultural activities will inspire the children to know more and more about our glorious culture, help them in building their character and to grow as a responsible citizens of our Mother land.

Eye Camps held in Aashrama Premises during April 2008

In the month of April 2008, a total 196 patients arrived during the ongoing Eye Camps in the Aashrama Campus. Of these, till now 70 cataract operations and 25 operations related to Lacrimal Sac are performed.

Medical Camp for Rural School Children held on 20th March, 2008

Ramakrishna Math, Ulsoor and volunteer doctors from Dr. Syamala Reddy Dental College, conducted Free Medical Camp at Govt. Higher Primary School, B Channasandra, Bangalore Rural District.

Around 250 school children were covered in this Health Check Up. Wherein General Health , ENT and Dental check up were performed by qualified Doctors. Few cases of serious diseases were detected and Math is trying to help them in getting good treatment in Bangalore city. Free Medicines were distribted.

Health Tips and importance of cleanliness were explained to School Children.

The Camp is aimed at giving School Children (5th Std to 10th Std) a taste of various elevating and healthy pursuits in life. Saree Distribution Programme Completed

National Youth Day Celebrated on 12th Jan, 2008

National Youth Day Celebrations were held at Swami Vivekananda Park, Ulsoor Lake on 12th January, 2008. School students fondly remembered Swamiji’s great contribution to our motherland and to the humanity as a whole.
Around 1200 school children from eight schools participated in this event.

Shri Amar Kumar Pandey, IPS Commissioner, Youth Service and Sports, Govt of Karnataka, presided over the event as Chief guest.

155th Birth Anniversary of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi was celebrated at our Math on Suday, 30th December, 2007.

20,000 copies of “Call to the Nation” distributed

At the Bangalore Book Fair held between 12th Oct and 21st Oct about 20,000 complimentary copies of
Swami Vivekananda’s Call to the nation” were distributed to the youth.

Durga Pooja celebrated

Durga Pooja was celebrated on October 19th in the math.

Free tutions for school children

As part of its welfare activities the math has started free tution facilities for students of class X in its premesis.

Care for rural school children

As part of its welfare activities the math has distributed school uniforms, notebooks and other educational materials
to school children studying in Govt. Primary and High schools. By this scheme 2642 students from 43 villages were benefitted.

Number of Eye Operations conducted by the Math crosses 10,000 mark

As part of its healthcare activities the math performs free cataract operations in both rural and urban areas.
By the grace of Sri Ramakrishna, as of July 31, 2007 the math has conducted 10,110 cataract operations out of 30,382 screened patients through 280 camps
held since 1999. We take this opportunity to convey our heartfelt thanks to the doctors, volunteers and well-wishers.

New Charitable Dispensary Inaugurated

We are happy to inform you that our Math has started its medical services through the newly constructed “Vivekananda Charitable
Dispensary”.

Following Services are provided here:-

• General O.P.D
• Diabetic and Cardiac Department
• Dental Department
• Eye Department
• ENT Department
• X-Ray, Ultra Sound Scanning and E.C.G
• Diagnostic Centre

Consultancy and Medicines are given free of cost.

We earnestly appeal to the Doctors/ Lab Technicians/ Staff Nurses/ Paramedical Staffs to join
our voluntary workforce in order to enhance the service activites.

This dispensary is open to the needy everyday between 8.00 AM & 12.00 PM within the math premises except on Sundays.
